Prologue

“It’s just down that hall and to the left.” Atticus Zarnaah said enthusiastically, pointing down the hall.
“Thank you sir!” The student chirped, wandering down the hall, her Exto, a white tiger, padded alongside her.
Atticus grinned, and turned around to watch all of the students, milling around the commons in their gold-trimmed white robes. The uniforms, staying true to the school’s title and symbol, had a bright sun embroidered on the back.
Atticus and his brother, Alexander Zarnaah, had founded Elios Academy, a school for those select few who harnessed the power of magic. It had just recently opened, so the halls were crowded with new students rushing to their classes.
The chimes echoed throughout the school, signaling that class had started. Atticus returned to the section where he and his brother’s offices were located. Atticus went in to check on his co-headmaster brother, but he was not in the office. What was located in that tiny, messy room was a black envelope, with the Dark Lord’s imprint.
The Dark Lord? What business could Alexander have with that… man? That necromancer? Those who resorted to dark magic such as necromancy were shunned from the magic world. Whatever reason the Dark Lord had sent a letter to Alexander for, it was definitely not a good one. Hesitantly, Atticus took the letter out of the envelope and began reading it.

Hello Alexander,
I’m surprised at you, seeing what goody-two-shoes you and your brother have turned out to be. However, I am not going to turn down a man with such malicious plans. To kill your own brother! Hah! Despicable, I love it. I have provided a separate note with the desired spells. Of course, there is a code to unlocking it. Security reasons, as you know. You know where to find it.
~The Dark lord
He wants to kill me? Surely, this has to be a mistake, Atticus wondered nervously. I shall discuss this with my brother.
Being the straightforward man he is, the old geezer decided it was a good idea to face this matter by asking his brother directly. He walked out of the office area and called upon his Exto, Agni the phoenix.
“Agni, find Alexander and tell him I have something important to speak with him about.”
“Sure thing, Mr. Boss-Man” joked the Exto. Agni lifted into the air, his golden wings blazing like the sun.

“I am here Atticus, what is it you need?” Alexander asked impatiently.
“I have summoned you to discuss this,” Atticus replies, waving the black envelope.
“Tell me, why were you my office?” Alexander demanded, yanking the envelope out of his brother’s hand.
“I am afraid that is irrelevant to this conversation,” Atticus told him calmly. “Since when are you pen-pals with the Dark Lord?”
“How funny,” Alexander said grimly, clearly not amused by his brother’s witty comment. “Bartram, aid me.”
Alexander’s Exto, a cobra, slinked out of a nearby pot hissing “Yessssss, what issss it?”
“Get the spells.” He commanded, then turned back to Atticus while his Exto slithered away. “Now, brother. I am afraid things will have to change from now on. No longer will I be in your shadow, no longer known only as ‘your little brother.’ Elios Academy will have a new headmaster today.” he laughed evilly.
Just then, Bartram came back in human form, holding a black book and a staff shaped like that of a cobra’s head. He threw the staff to Alexander, who caught it and turned to Atticus.
“Now Elios Academy will turn over a new leaf.”
Alexander immediately cast a spell that made hands come out of the ground and trap Agni.
“This is the power of necromancy.” Alexander cackled sinisterly.
“You’ll never get away with this Alexander!” Atticus said. He cast a spell, a fireball flying towards Alexander. “Let’s turn the heat up in here, eh?”
While Alexander was distracted, Atticus freed Agni. “Keep the snake busy.” He said, then looked back at Alexander. “I’ll handle my brother.”
“So, Atti,” Alexander said, taking a step forward, using Atticus’s childhood nickname. “How about it? Wanna surrender, step down as Headmaster?”
“Hah. And let someone like you run the academy? In your dreams.” he chuckled. “Flamma!” A flame erupted under Alexander, forming a circle of fire around him. “Erumpentium!” he said, finishing the spell.
“You are not powerful enough, young brother!” Atticus shouted over the roaring flames. “Stop this foolishness!”
“Oh, I will. For now.”
The last thing Atticus saw was the wicked grin of his brother through the blazing heat, and the last thing he heard was the menacing whisper of one word, “Fax.”

Chapter 1

In the land of Qeklavon, there was a village. It wasn’t anything special, just a normal village. There were however, a few problems. In ancient lore, the children of this village-and many other villages across Qeklavon-would mysteriously disappear. Why they disappeared, no one knew.  And why they stopped disappearing, no one could tell.
In this village lived a 14-year-old girl and her mother. The girl, Aisling, was a lively girl, and made the best out of every situation. She was rather short for her age, with long brown hair, and unusual green eyes.
“Mother, I’m going out to get a pail of water in the forest.” Aisling yelled.
“Be careful!” replied her mother.
“Got it.” Aisling chirped as she shut the door, and strolled towards the forest. Aisling and her mother lived on the outskirts of the village, closest to the forest. They didn’t have the best accommodations, but ever since the disappearance of their father, they made do with what they had.
The well was deep in the forest, so Aisling was used to these long walks. However, something seemed… different. She felt like something was watching her. The forest surroundings, which were usually familiar to her, were unwelcoming and jumbled in her mind. She could see shadows moving across the trees.
“I better make this trip quick, this place is freaky.” Aisling muttered to herself.
Before she knew it, she had reached the crumbling well. Aisling tied the bucket to the rope and lowered it, when she thought there was something rustling in the leaves behind her. A quick glance revealed nothing, so she kept lowering the bucket.
She pulled the bucket back up a minute later, and began walking back home. After a few minutes, however, she felt the same sense of foreboding, the feeling that someone or something was watching her. Whoever it was, she wasn’t going to stand for it.
“Who’s there?” she called out, stopping in her tracks.
At that moment, four of the ugliest looking creatures Aisling had ever seen popped out of the brush, and there was pretty bad looking men back at the village.
The biggest monster looked like a bear without fur, and was dripping in blue slime. The next was shaped sort of like a giant squash, covered with dark black fur, and on his face was a big red eye and a beak. The third monster was small compared to the others, but made up for it with speed, gigantic teeth, and fierce claws. The last of the four was like a rabbit, but no ordinary rabbit, for it was standing on two legs and about 6 feet tall.
She looked upon them in horror, as they stepped closer to her, grinning. Thinking fast, Aisling took her bucket of water and splashed it on them.
Not expecting this, the monsters were distracted and she took off running away from them. Little did she know, however, that she was running deeper into the forest.
She could see them several meters behind her, they were closing in. She immediately ran into a nearby cave. The monsters were so big they had to go in one by one which gave her some time. She ran further and suddenly tripped on a stalagmite and fell, hitting her head. She was lying on the floor, helpless.
The monsters had almost reached her. Her mind was everywhere. She started having flashbacks of when she was little.
“Exto meum et vocavi te!” A deep voice said in her mind.
“Exto meum et vocavi te, what’s that supposed to mean?” Aisling repeated groggily.
Suddenly, a bright light flashed in the cave. Out of thin air, a majestic unicorn appeared.
Aisling’s eyes widened in surprised. The unicorn reared up on its hind legs and whinnied.
The monsters were just as shocked. So shocked, in fact, that their legs were planted in the ground like cement as they stared at the unicorn, jaws agape. They still didn’t move when the unicorn shot a ray of rainbows at the giant rabbit, disintegrating him.
I must be hallucinating. Aisling thought to herself, her head spinning a mile a minute. A unicorn? No way! And one that shoots rainbows, at that? How cliche…
While the unicorn was shooting a rainbow at one of the monsters, one sneaked up behind it. The unicorn sharply turned around and impaled the creature with its horn, leaving a red stain on it.
It then trotted over to Aisling.
“Heya, you dead yet?” it snickered, looking her over.
“Who are you?” Aisling asked drowsily.
“I am Elwyn, the unicorn, also known as your new Exto.” Elwyn chirped back. “Come on hot stuff, let’s get you to the Academy.”
With those last words from Elwyn, Aisling’s world went dark.
